Philosophy and its Major Branches
An Introduction · Love of Wisdom · The Mother of All Disciplines
Learning Objectives
Define philosophy from its Greek roots and recognise that it begins in aporia — the productive confusion that arises when we question what we take for granted
Recall key definitions offered by Socrates, Hobbes, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Russell and Wittgenstein, and notice how each frames philosophy differently
Explain why philosophy is called the “Queen of the Sciences” or “Mother of all Disciplines”
Distinguish the four major branches — Metaphysics, Epistemology, Axiology and Logic — and state the central questions each branch asks
See how the branches interlock: every field of knowledge ultimately rests on philosophical ground when its fundamental units are questioned
What is Philosophy?
Philosophy, the word is derived from Greek philo which means love and sophia which means wisdom, so, literally speaking, philosophy is love for wisdom.
When someone hears of the word philosophy they imagine something really profound thought (or boring long chatter) about something really important, unique (or irrelevant and stupid :D ). To my understanding, philosophy lies in questioning the commonly perceived very insignificant things, things that are always taken for granted; such as, how many times you have called an action or a thing as truthful, false, right, wrong, good, or bad, normal, abnormal, beautiful, ugly, just, unjust, rational, irrational — but upon being asked how would you define truth? (or any of the other terms just listed), you are dazzled and lost in the abyss of aporia.
How Philosophers Have Defined It
Let’s first see how the philosophers have defined it. Notice that each definition is itself a philosophical act — it selects what counts as central and what can be left in the background.
Queen of the Sciences / Mother of All Disciplines
Philosophy is often called “Queen of the Sciences” or the “Mother of all Disciplines” because it birthed all disciplines that you know. Physics was formerly called “natural philosophy”; psychology, “Philosophy of the Mind”; Mathematics, Chemistry, Law, Medicine — you name it! All these fields started crawling through the lap of the mother philosophy and eventually grew up to live independently.

Metaphysics — The Study of Reality
Metaphysics investigates the fundamental nature of reality, existence, and the very universe per se. It also looks beyond the physical world to understand the core make-up of “being.” It concerns itself with questions like: “What is real?”, “What is mind?”, “Does Free Will exist?”, “Does God exist?” and so on.
Key territories inside metaphysics include:
Epistemology — The Study of Knowledge
Epistemology is the theory of knowledge that focuses on how understanding works, what counts as genuine knowledge, and the limits of what can be understood. It asks questions like: “What is truth?”, “How do we know what we know?”, “Can we ever be completely certain of anything?”, “Should we be skeptics?” and so on.
Central concerns and classic positions:
Axiology & Logic
Axiology — The Study of Values
Axiology examines what is right and wrong, good and bad, beautiful and ugly, and more, while building frameworks to evaluate human behaviour, justice, and responsibilities. It inquires into questions such as: “What makes an action right?”, “What is our duty to other people?”, “Is morality absolute?” and so on.
Logic — The Study of Reason
Logic is the methodology of philosophy to study arguments, valid reasoning, syllogisms, and fallacies of thought. It is the tool by which philosophy tests its own claims and the claims of every other discipline.
