Every metrical system begins with the smallest units of spoken language. In English those units are the syllable, the stress, and the foot. Until these three elements are clearly understood and reliably heard, further study of meter remains abstract and uncertain. This lecture therefore concentrates on precise definition, practical recognition, and the relationships among the three.
The goal is not memorization of labels for their own sake. The goal is the training of the ear so that stress patterns become audible and describable. Once the ear can hear syllables, stresses, and feet with confidence, the larger structures of meter become accessible.
The Syllable
A syllable is the smallest unit of pronunciation that contains a single vowel sound (or vowel equivalent). It is the basic pulse of spoken language. Every English word contains at least one syllable; most contain more.
Syllables can be identified by clapping or tapping while pronouncing a word slowly. Each beat corresponds to one syllable. The word “poetry” has three: po-e-try. The word “strength” has one. The word “individual” has five: in-di-vid-u-al.
Several practical points require attention.
- Vowel sounds determine syllables. A syllable must contain a vowel or a vowel-like sound (including syllabic consonants such as the final sound in “button” or “prism” in some pronunciations).
- Consonant clusters do not create extra syllables. The word “strengths” remains one syllable despite its many consonants.
- Diphthongs count as one syllable. The vowel sounds in “eye,” “go,” and “how” are complex, yet each forms only one syllable.
- Elision and contraction reduce syllable count in practice. In rapid speech “every” often becomes two syllables rather than three, and “family” may become two. Metrical analysis must decide whether to follow the full formal pronunciation or the reduced spoken form. Context and the demands of the line usually settle the question.
In metrical scansion we normally count the syllables that would be pronounced in a clear, deliberate reading of the line. We do not count every possible orthographic division, nor do we collapse the line into the most rapid conversational form. A middle level of clarity is the practical standard.
Stress
Stress is the relative prominence given to a syllable when it is spoken. A stressed syllable is typically louder, longer, and higher in pitch than an unstressed syllable in the same word or phrase. English is a stress-timed language: the stressed syllables tend to occur at roughly regular intervals, while the unstressed syllables accommodate themselves between those beats.
Stress is not an absolute property. It is relative. In the word “present,” the first syllable is stressed when the word is a noun and the second when it is a verb. In a sentence the same syllable may receive stronger or weaker emphasis according to the speaker’s intention and the surrounding words. For metrical purposes we distinguish two primary levels:
- Stressed (marked / or ´ )
- Unstressed (marked x or ˘ )
Some theorists introduce secondary stress for greater precision, especially in longer words. For the practical study of meter, the binary distinction between stressed and unstressed is usually sufficient. Secondary stresses can be noted when they affect the feel of a line, but they need not complicate the basic scansion.
Word Stress and Sentence Stress
Two related but distinct phenomena must be kept in view.
Word stress is the inherent prominence pattern of a word when spoken in isolation. “Poetry” carries primary stress on the first syllable. “About” carries it on the second. Dictionaries record these patterns, and they remain relatively stable.
Sentence stress (or phrasal stress) is the additional prominence given to certain words inside a spoken sentence for reasons of meaning or rhythm. Content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs) usually receive stress. Function words (articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions) usually remain unstressed unless the speaker wishes to emphasize them.
Metrical scansion must take both levels into account. A word that carries inherent stress may still be relatively weak inside a particular line if the surrounding context demotes it. Conversely, a normally weak word may be promoted if the meter or the sense requires it. The ear, not the dictionary alone, is the final judge.
Stress is the heartbeat of English verse. Everything else in meter is an arrangement of that heartbeat into audible patterns.

Recognizing Stress in Practice
Many students initially struggle to hear stress with confidence. The difficulty is real but surmountable. Several methods help.
- Pronounce the word or phrase in a natural speaking voice, then exaggerate the loudness of the syllable you suspect is stressed. If the exaggeration sounds plausible, the stress is correctly placed. If it sounds absurd, try another syllable.
- Tap a finger or nod the head while speaking. The natural points of emphasis usually coincide with the stresses.
- Compare pairs of words that differ only in stress placement (CONtract / conTRACT, RECord / reCORD, INvalid / inVALid). The contrast trains the ear to notice the difference.
- Read the line aloud at a moderate pace and listen for the syllables that carry the weight of the voice. Those are the stresses.
With regular practice the recognition of stress becomes increasingly automatic. The goal is to reach the point at which the pattern of a line is heard before it is analyzed.
The Foot
A foot is the basic metrical unit in accentual-syllabic verse. It consists of a small group of syllables containing one primary stress, together with the unstressed syllables that accompany it. The foot is the building block from which metrical lines are constructed.
English verse traditionally recognizes several common feet. The most important are the following:
- Iamb (x / ): one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. Example: “to BE,” “a GAIN,” “the WORLD.”
- Trochee ( / x ): one stressed syllable followed by one unstressed syllable. Example: “GOing,” “HAPpy,” “NEVer.”
- Anapest (x x / ): two unstressed syllables followed by one stressed syllable. Example: “in the DARK,” “un-der-STAND.”
- Dactyl ( / x x ): one stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables. Example: “MUR-mur-ing,” “PO-e-try.”
- Spondee ( / / ): two stressed syllables in succession. Example: “DEAD SLOW,” “YES, YES.”
- Pyrrhic (x x ): two unstressed syllables in succession. This foot is less stable and often debated; many metrists prefer to treat sequences of two unstressed syllables as part of neighboring feet or as substitutions.
The iamb is by far the most frequent foot in traditional English verse, followed by the trochee. Anapests and dactyls appear regularly but less often as the dominant foot of an entire poem. Spondees and pyrrhics usually occur as substitutions inside lines that are otherwise iambic or trochaic.
Why the Foot Matters
The foot provides a convenient unit for measuring and describing rhythmic patterns. A line of five iambs is an iambic pentameter. A line of four trochees is a trochaic tetrameter. Naming the dominant foot and the number of feet allows precise discussion of a poem’s rhythmic character.
At the same time, the foot is an analytical convenience rather than an absolute natural entity. Speech does not always divide itself into neat metrical feet. The value of the concept lies in its ability to reveal recurring patterns and meaningful variations. When a line departs from the expected foot pattern, the departure itself becomes expressive, provided the underlying expectation remains audible.
Scanning a Line: The Basic Procedure
Scansion is the act of marking the stresses and dividing the line into feet. A practical method proceeds as follows:
- Read the line aloud several times in a natural voice until the rhythm feels stable.
- Mark each stressed syllable with a / and each unstressed syllable with an x.
- Look for the most regular grouping of these marks into recognized feet (usually pairs or triples).
- Divide the line into those feet with vertical bars.
- Name the dominant foot and count the number of feet to identify the meter.
- Note any substitutions, extra syllables, or missing syllables as variations.
Example with a simple iambic line:

The line divides cleanly into five iambs. It is therefore iambic pentameter.
Few lines are perfectly regular. Most contain at least one variation. The ability to recognize both the underlying pattern and the variations is the practical skill that scansion trains.
Common Difficulties and How to Address Them
Several recurring difficulties appear when students first work with these units.
Difficulty hearing stress in function words
Articles, prepositions, and auxiliary verbs are usually unstressed, yet in certain positions they may receive emphasis. Read the line aloud and trust the natural movement of the voice. If a function word feels prominent, mark it as stressed. Context determines the marking more than any fixed rule.
Uncertainty about secondary stress
Longer words often contain a secondary stress. For basic scansion it is usually sufficient to mark only the primary stress and treat the secondary as unstressed or as a lighter stress. When the secondary stress clearly affects the rhythm of the line, it can be noted separately. Simplicity is preferable to over-marking in the early stages.
Lines that seem to resist division into feet
Some lines, especially in free verse or in highly varied metrical verse, do not divide neatly. In such cases mark the stresses first and only then attempt a division into feet. If no regular foot pattern emerges, the line may be deliberately irregular or non-metrical. Record what you hear rather than forcing an artificial regularity.
Disagreement between dictionary stress and spoken rhythm
Dictionaries record word stress in isolation. Verse is spoken language in context. When the two conflict, prefer the reading that sounds natural in the line. Metrical promotion or demotion of syllables is a normal feature of English verse and often a source of expressive power.
Practical Exercises for the Ear
Technical understanding remains inert until it is converted into listening skill. The following exercises build that skill.
- Select twenty common two-syllable words. Mark the stress in each. Then use each word in a short phrase and notice whether the stress remains stable.
- Write out a short paragraph of ordinary prose. Mark every stressed syllable. Observe how the stresses fall at irregular intervals. This is the natural rhythm of English speech against which meter organizes itself.
- Take a simple iambic line from a familiar poem. Mark the syllables, stresses, and feet. Then rewrite the same sense in a trochaic pattern and in an anapestic pattern. Notice how the change in foot alters the feel of the statement.
- Read a short poem aloud while tapping only the stressed syllables. The taps reveal the underlying beat. Then read it again while tapping every syllable. The contrast between the two performances clarifies the relationship between stress and syllable count.
Regular practice of this kind is more valuable than extensive reading about meter. The ear learns by doing.
The Relationship Among the Three Units
Syllables are the raw pulses of the language. Stresses are the relative prominences given to some of those pulses. Feet are the conventional groupings of stressed and unstressed syllables into recurring units. Meter arises when feet are repeated in a recognizable pattern across a line and, usually, across successive lines.
The three units form a hierarchy. Without clear syllables there can be no clear stress. Without clear stress there can be no clear feet. Without clear feet there can be no stable meter. Each level depends on the one beneath it. Mastery therefore begins at the bottom and moves upward.
At the same time the levels interact. The desire to complete a metrical pattern can influence how a syllable is pronounced or whether a secondary stress is promoted. The natural stress of a word can resist the expected metrical pattern and thereby create expressive tension. The skilled poet works with both the natural movement of the language and the organizing pressure of the meter, allowing each to shape the other.
The foot is not a prison. It is a measure. Like any measure, it makes proportion visible and variation meaningful.
A working attitude toward metrical form
Once syllables, stresses, and feet are securely heard and understood, the poet possesses the fundamental tools for both the analysis and the composition of metrical verse. The patterns that larger metrical forms impose become legible, and the decisions involved in following, varying, or departing from those patterns become conscious rather than accidental.
How do I know whether a syllable is stressed or unstressed?
Read the word or phrase aloud in a natural voice. The stressed syllable is the one that receives greater loudness, length, or pitch. Exaggerating the suspected stress can confirm or correct the judgment. Comparison with known pairs of words that differ only in stress placement is also effective training.
Are there always exactly two levels of stress?
In reality stress is gradient. For practical scansion, however, a binary distinction between stressed and unstressed is usually sufficient. Secondary stress can be noted when it clearly affects the rhythm, but over-marking often obscures the dominant pattern rather than clarifying it.
Must every line divide neatly into standard feet?
