What Is True? A Little Lesson in Thinking
Let's learn three big words: Truth, Lie, and Opinion — and how to tell them apart.
Have you ever said something is "true" or "false" without really knowing why? That's okay — most people do! Let's figure out what these words really mean.
One more surprise: being true and being kind are two different things! A statement can be true and still be about something sad. And someone can say something false while still trying to be nice. Truth just tells us if words match the world — it doesn't tell us if something is good or kind. That's a different, important question all on its own — one about how we treat each other. So being honest matters, and so does being kind — we need both!
🎯 Try It Yourself!
Read each sentence below and tap what you think it is: Truth, Lie, or Opinion.
1. "A week has seven days."
That's right! A week really does have seven days — we can check a calendar. That matches reality, so it's true.
2. "Fish can fly like birds."
That's right! Fish swim, they don't fly like birds. That does not match reality, so it's false.
3. "Puppies are the cutest animals."
That's right! Cuteness is a feeling — different people feel differently. It's an opinion, not something we can check.
4. "It will be sunny tomorrow."
That's right! Tomorrow hasn't happened yet, so we can't check it. It's an opinion (or a guess) until tomorrow comes.
