Why Technical Craft Matters for Poets

Table of Contents M any beginning poets believe that technical craft is the enemy of authenticity. They fear that attention to meter, sound, and structure will produce stiff, artificial verse, while spontaneous expression will produce living poetry. The fear is understandable. It is also mistaken. Technical craft does not suppress originality. It multiplies the ways originality can appear. A poet who understands the materials of language can choose to follow a pattern, to vary it, or to break it for expressive effect. A poet who lacks that understanding is limited to whatever happens by accident. Accidents sometimes succeed, but they cannot be repeated or refined. Craft can. Info!
