Natural vs Synthetic
- Natural - essential oils, absolutes, resins from plants. Complex but expensive and variable.
- Synthetic - lab-created molecules (Iso E Super, Ambroxan, Hedione, Calone). Often cleaner, stronger, more consistent.
- Almost every modern perfume is a mix of both.
High-impact materials
- Ambroxan / Ambrox - dry, ambery, woody, long-lasting
- Iso E Super - soft woody, transparent, boosts projection
- Hedione - jasmine-like, airy, increases radiance
- Vanillin / Ethyl vanillin - sweet, creamy longevity
- Musks (Galaxolide etc.) - clean or sensual skin scent
Paper shows only top notes. Skin chemistry changes everything.
Use unscented moisturizer first for better development.
Heart and base notes appear. The real perfume is the dry-down.
Nose fatigue is real. Give your nose time between sprays.
A scent can feel different in the morning, after exercise or in heat.
How to roughly judge sillage
- Spray once on the inner wrist. Wait 10-15 minutes.
- Ask someone to walk past at normal speed from 1-2 meters.
- If they clearly smell it - moderate to strong sillage.
- If only when very close - soft / skin scent.
- Repeat after 1 hour and after 3-4 hours.
Notes that increase sillage
- Ambroxan, Iso E Super, Hedione, strong musks
- Spices (pepper, cinnamon), incense, oud
- Heavy florals (tuberose, jasmine sambac)
- Higher concentration (EDP / Parfum) usually projects more
Simple way to assess projection
- Spray 1-2 times on chest or neck.
- After 15-20 minutes, ask someone to approach from 2-3 meters.
- Note the distance at which they first detect the scent.
- Strong = arm length or more. Soft = within 30-50 cm.
Materials known for good projection
- Iso E Super, Ambroxan, Calone, strong citrus
- Aldehydes (classic bright effect)
- Pepper, ginger, incense
Typical longevity (visual)
How to measure longevity
- Spray once on clean skin at a known time.
- Check every hour (do not rub).
- Also test on fabric - often lasts 1-3 days.
