What Is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a design system for creating sustainable human habitats and agricultural systems by mimicking the patterns and relationships found in natural ecosystems. Coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970s, it combines “permanent” and “agriculture” (and later “culture”).

It is less a set of rigid techniques and more a way of thinking: observe, interact, and design so that elements support one another, waste becomes resource, and the system becomes more resilient over time.

These three ethics guide every design decision. Techniques serve the ethics — not the other way around.
Holmgren’s 12 Design Principles

1. Observe & Interact

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Take time to engage with nature before making changes. Careful observation reveals patterns, flows, and opportunities that rushed action misses.

2. Catch & Store Energy

Make hay while the sun shines.

Develop systems that collect resources when abundant and store them for times of need — water, sunlight, biomass, skills, and money.

3. Obtain a Yield

You can’t work on an empty stomach.

Ensure that you are getting truly useful rewards from the work you do. Yields can be food, knowledge, community, or income.

4. Apply Self-Regulation & Accept Feedback

The sins of the fathers…

We need to discourage inappropriate activity to ensure systems can continue to function well. Negative feedback is valuable information.

5. Use & Value Renewable Resources

Let nature take its course.

Make the best use of nature’s abundance. Reduce dependence on non-renewable resources wherever practical.

6. Produce No Waste

Waste not, want not.

Value and make use of all the resources available. One organism’s waste is another’s food. Design for closed loops.

7. Design from Patterns to Details

Can’t see the forest for the trees.

Step back and observe patterns in nature and society. These patterns form the backbone; details fill in later.

8. Integrate Rather Than Segregate

Many hands make light work.

Put the right things in the right place. Relationships between elements are as important as the elements themselves.

9. Use Small & Slow Solutions

Slow and steady wins the race.

Small, slow systems are easier to maintain, make better use of local resources, and are more adaptable.

10. Use & Value Diversity

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Diversity reduces vulnerability to threats and takes advantage of the unique nature of the environment.

11. Use Edges & Value the Marginal

Don’t think you are on the right track just because it’s a well-beaten path.

The interface between things is where the most interesting events take place. Edges are often the most productive and diverse zones.

12. Creatively Use & Respond to Change

Vision is not seeing things as they are, but as they will be.

We can have a positive impact on inevitable change by carefully observing and intervening at the right time.
Zones — Design by Frequency of Use

Zones organize space according to how often you visit or manage an area. Place elements that need frequent attention closer to the home.

Zone 0 — Home

The house / living center.

Energy efficiency, indoor systems, human comfort, and the starting point for all design decisions.

Zone 1 — Intense Use

Visited daily.

Kitchen garden, herbs, compost, small animals, greenhouse, frequently used tools and paths.
2

Zone 2 — Semi-Intensive

Visited regularly.

Orchards, larger vegetable beds, poultry, beehives, main compost systems.
3

Zone 3 — Farm / Field

Occasional management.

Main crops, grazing, larger livestock, windbreaks, water storage.
4

Zone 4 — Semi-Wild

Minimal intervention.

Foraging, forestry, wild harvesting, long-term timber, wildlife habitat.
5

Zone 5 — Wilderness

No intervention.

Left alone for observation, biodiversity, and natural processes. Our teacher and baseline.
Key Design Concepts

Stacking / Layers

Vertical and temporal diversity.

Use canopy, understory, shrub, herbaceous, groundcover, vine, and root layers. Also stack in time (succession) so the system yields across seasons and years.

Guilds

Mutually supportive plant/animal groups.

A group of species that benefit one another — e.g., a fruit tree with nitrogen-fixers, dynamic accumulators, insectary plants, and groundcovers around it.

Edge Effect

Productivity at interfaces.

Edges (forest/meadow, water/land, path/bed) often hold higher diversity and productivity. Design to increase beneficial edge.

Relative Location

Place elements so they serve each other.

Chickens near the garden for pest control and manure; compost near the kitchen; water tanks upslope for gravity feed.

Multiple Functions

Each element serves many needs.

A pond can store water, moderate climate, raise fish, grow aquatic plants, reflect light, and create edge habitat.

Multiple Elements

Important needs met in several ways.

Water from rainwater, greywater, and a well. Food from annuals, perennials, and foraging. Redundancy builds resilience.
Practical Starting Points

Observe first

Spend time watching sun, wind, water flow, soil, and existing plants before changing anything major.

Start small & close to home

Zone 1 projects (herbs, compost, small beds) teach fastest and give early yields.

Build soil

Compost, mulch, cover crops, and minimize disturbance. Living soil is the foundation of almost every system.

Catch water

Slow, spread, and sink water with swales, basins, mulch, and tanks. Water is often the limiting factor.

Connect elements

Place things so outputs of one become inputs of another. Reduce work by design, not by effort alone.

Learn from patterns

Study natural patterns (branching, spirals, edges) and successful local systems. Adapt rather than copy blindly.

Common Applications

Home & Garden

Most accessible entry point.

Kitchen gardens, food forests, water harvesting, composting, chicken tractors, and energy-efficient home design.

Food Forests

Perennial, multi-layered systems.

Mimic forest structure with productive species. Low maintenance once established, high diversity of yields.

Water Systems

Slow, spread, sink.

Swales, ponds, rain gardens, keyline design, and greywater. Manage water as the primary limiting resource in many climates.

Community & Social

People care in practice.

Shared gardens, skill exchanges, local economies, and decision-making structures that embody the ethics.
