Types of Literary Devices: A Categorical Framework for Close Reading

M ost lists of literary devices are exactly that: lists. A hundred terms in alphabetical order, allegory sitting next to alliteration sitting next to anaphora, with no real account of why a student should reach for one over another, or what any of them are actually doing to a sentence, a scene, or an entire novel's architecture. That approach is fine as a glossary. It's not much use for teaching someone to read closely. This is an attempt at something more useful than another alphabetical dump: a framework that groups literary devices by the scale at which they operate, from the level of a single word up to the structure of an entire narrative, so the relationships between them actually become visible.
