Women as Protagonists in Contemporary Novels

T he contemporary novel has transformed the literary representation of women by placing female consciousness, experience, desire, intellectual autonomy, and social agency at the centre of narrative construction. The woman protagonist increasingly occupies the position of an interpretive subject through whom questions of identity, race, class, sexuality, migration, embodiment, political authority, and cultural belonging acquire literary articulation. Feminist literary criticism has substantially contributed to this transformation by examining the ways in which narrative form participates in the construction of gendered subjectivity and by demonstrating the significance of female consciousness, speech, and action within literary representation (Riley & Pearce, 2018; Youngkin, 2007).
